Storage ottomans do two jobs, so choose the size by the job first. Ours run from 12 to 54 inches across. The smallest, 20 inches or less and mostly cubes and rounds, work as a footrest or a spare seat. Those between 21 and 35 inches suit an armchair or the foot of a bed. About half measure 36 inches or more and suit a sofa: the deeper ones, 20 inches or more, can stand in for a coffee table, while the slim benches, 16 to 18 inches deep, include a few solid wood pieces at 52 to 54 inches, most with medallion, floral or geometric patterns. Check the lid, too: most descriptions mention a hinged lid that stays attached, and others a lift-off lid. Faux leather leads the covers, followed by chenille, linen, velvet and boucle, and about a quarter are tufted. Most lean brown, gray or black, with a few in blue, green, aqua or pink.
