What Size TV Stand for a 65-Inch TV? Width and Height for 50- to 85-Inch TVs

What Size TV Stand for a 65-Inch TV? Width and Height for 50- to 85-Inch TVs

For a 65-inch TV, choose a stand at least 57 inches wide, about the width of the screen, and ideally 60 to 70 inches so a few inches of stand show on each side. For any TV, the stand should be at least as wide as the screen, and about 4 to 12 inches wider usually looks balanced. For height, aim to put the center of the screen about 40 to 42 inches off the floor, which usually means a stand about 20 to 25 inches tall for a 65-inch TV and lower for bigger screens.

TV stand size guide

  • 50-inch TV (about 44 inches wide): a stand about 48 to 55 inches wide and 24 to 30 inches tall.
  • 55-inch TV (about 48 inches wide): about 52 to 60 inches wide and 22 to 28 inches tall.
  • 65-inch TV (about 57 inches wide): about 60 to 70 inches wide and 20 to 25 inches tall.
  • 75-inch TV (about 65 inches wide): about 70 to 80 inches wide and 18 to 22 inches tall.
  • 85-inch TV (about 74 inches wide): 80 inches wide or more and about 16 to 20 inches tall, or mount it on the wall.
  • Depth: most stands are about 15 to 20 inches deep, enough for most TVs on feet or a pedestal.

TV sizes are measured diagonally, so these widths are approximate.

How wide should a TV stand be?

At least as wide as the TV. A screen that hangs past the ends looks top-heavy and is easier to bump. About 2 to 6 inches of stand on each side gives the TV a visual base.

Then check the feet. Many newer TVs stand on two feet near the outer edges instead of one center pedestal. Measure from the outside of one foot to the outside of the other; the stand's top needs to be wider than that, with an inch or two to spare at each end.

Going longer is fine, too: against a long wall, an 80-inch stand under a 65-inch TV looks intentional. About 6 in 10 of the in-stock TV stands in our collection are 60 inches wide or wider.

How tall should a TV stand be?

The goal is to put the center of the screen near your eye level when you're sitting. On a typical sofa, that's about 40 to 42 inches off the floor. For your own number, sit where you usually watch and have someone measure from the floor to your eyes.

Then do the math: eye height, minus half the screen's height, minus the height of the TV's feet. A 65-inch TV is about 32 inches tall, so half is 16. With your eyes at 42 inches and feet that lift the screen 3 inches, the stand should be about 23 inches tall. That's why bigger TVs need lower stands. Between two heights? Go lower; looking slightly down is easier on the neck than looking up.

Depth, weight and cables

  • Depth: make sure your TV's feet sit fully on top, and add a soundbar's depth if one will sit in front.
  • Weight: your TV's spec sheet lists its weight with the stand. Our TV stand listings don't state a weight limit, so for a large, heavy TV consider mounting it on the wall, and email help@FurniFindUSA.com with any fit questions.
  • Tip-over safety: secure the TV and the stand to the wall with anti-tip straps or brackets, especially in a home with children.
  • Cables and devices: most of our TV stand listings mention built-in cable management or a cord cut-out. Open shelves keep devices ventilated and in range of the remote; solid doors hide clutter but can block the signal.

Mounting the TV instead?

On the wall, mount the TV with its center at about the same 40 to 42 inches. With a 65-inch TV, that puts the bottom of the screen around 26 inches up, so a console about 20 inches tall or lower leaves breathing room. Keep the console about as wide as the TV or wider, and have a pro or a stud finder confirm the wall can carry the load.

TVs in the bedroom

When you watch from bed, your eyes sit higher than on a sofa, so a taller stand makes sense. About half of the in-stock stands in our collection with dimensions in their listings are 30 inches tall or taller. The 60-inch white solid wood distressed TV stand is one: 34.75 inches high, 59.75 inches wide and 19 inches deep, in solid pine according to its listing, with enclosed storage. TV stands by TV size

50- and 55-inch TVs

The 48-inch taupe wood open shelving TV stand is listed at 47.75 inches wide, 24.25 inches high and 17.25 inches deep. That's about 2 inches on each side of a 50-inch TV. For a 55-inch TV, the 54-inch dark brown walnut TV stand is listed at 53.9 inches wide, 22.8 inches high and 15.3 inches deep, with open storage and built-in cable management.

65-inch TVs

The 64-inch brown mahogany solid wood open shelving TV stand is listed at 64 inches wide, 24 inches high and 18 inches deep. It leaves about 3.5 inches on each side of a 65-inch screen. For a lower look, the 71-inch white and beige TV stand is listed at 70.9 inches wide and just 18.8 inches high, for screens up to 65 inches, with a two-tone finish, splayed legs, and open and concealed storage.

70- and 75-inch TVs

For a 70- or 75-inch TV, low and long is the goal. The 71-inch natural wood TV stand is listed at 70.8 inches wide and 20.6 inches high, for screens up to 70 inches, in manufactured wood with a rustic style; at 13.7 inches deep it suits a narrow room, but check your TV's foot depth first.

For a 75-inch TV, the 80-inch brown leather TV stand is listed at 80 inches wide, 22 inches high and 20 inches deep, for screens up to 75 inches, with open and enclosed storage.

85-inch TVs

For an 85-inch TV, mounting is often simpler. If you'd rather use a stand, the 93-inch gray solid wood distressed TV stand is listed for screens up to 88 inches, at 92.5 inches wide and 27 inches high, though that height puts an 85-inch screen's center well above 42 inches.

Wall-mounted TVs

The 59-inch black floating mount TV stand is listed at 59.1 inches wide, 10.4 inches high and 12.6 inches deep. That width suits a mounted 55- or 65-inch TV. Since it mounts to the wall, you set its height.

You can compare every width and finish in TV stands, or only the solid wood TV stands. Before you settle on a spot, check the walkway; our coffee table size and height guide suggests about 30 inches between a coffee table and a TV stand.
