Coffee Table Size and Height: How to Pick One That Fits Your Sofa
Share
A coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa, sit within an inch or two of the sofa's seat height (usually 16 to 18 inches tall), and be placed 14 to 18 inches from the front edge of the seat. Leave about 30 inches of walking space on the other sides. Get those three numbers right and almost any style of table will look like it belongs.
Below, we'll go through how to measure, how shape changes things, what to do with a sectional, and a few tables from our catalog at different sizes so you can see how the numbers play out.
Three measurements to take first
You only need a tape measure and a few minutes.
- Sofa length: measure the full width of the sofa, arm to arm.
- Seat height: measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, pressed down lightly the way it is when someone sits. Most sofas land between 17 and 19 inches.
- Open floor: measure the space between the front of the sofa and whatever is opposite, whether that's a TV stand, chairs or a fireplace.
Write these down. Every rule below comes back to them.
Length: aim for about two-thirds of the sofa
A coffee table about two-thirds the length of the sofa looks balanced and leaves room at each end to walk in and sit down. It also means everyone on the sofa, including the person at the end, can reach it.
- 72-inch sofa or loveseat: a table around 48 inches long, or a round table 30 to 36 inches across.
- 84-inch sofa: a table around 54 to 56 inches long.
- 96-inch sofa or longer: a table around 60 to 72 inches long.
Two-thirds is a guide, not a law. Anything between half and three-quarters of the sofa length usually works. Below half, the table looks lost; above three-quarters, the sofa looks boxed in.
Height: match the seat, or go slightly lower
The coffee table should be level with the sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches lower. That's the height where you can set down a mug without reaching up or bending far forward, and where the table doesn't block the view across the room.
- Standard sofas with a seat height of 17 to 19 inches pair well with coffee tables 16 to 18 inches tall.
- Low, lounge-style sofas with a seat height of 15 to 16 inches look best with tables 14 to 15 inches tall.
- A table taller than the seat is fine for eating at the sofa, but it will feel bulky in a small room.
Distance: 14 to 18 inches from the sofa
Measure from the front edge of the sofa seat to the edge of the table. At 14 to 18 inches, you can reach a drink while sitting back and still have room for your knees and feet. Closer than 12 inches and people will bump their shins getting up. Farther than 20 inches and the table becomes something you have to lean for.
On the other sides, leave about 30 inches between the table and chairs, a TV stand or other furniture, so people can walk through without turning sideways. In a tight room, 24 inches is the working minimum.
Before you buy, mark the table's outline on the floor with painter's tape or lay down a piece of cardboard cut to size. Live with it for a day and see how you move around it.
Depth and shape
Rectangle
The classic choice for a standard three-seat sofa. It mirrors the sofa's shape and gives the most surface area. Keep the depth to about 24 to 32 inches; much deeper and the table is hard to reach across.
Oval
An oval has the reach of a rectangle without the corners, which helps in rooms where people walk past often or where there are small children. The 48" Natural Solid Wood Oval Coffee Table is listed at 48 inches long, 30 inches deep and 16 inches high, a good match for a sofa of about 72 inches. For an 84-inch sofa, the 55" Natural Solid Wood Oval Coffee Table is 55 inches long and 16.5 inches high, and its listing describes a minimalist look that draws on Scandinavian design.
Round and square
Round and square tables work best with loveseats, small sofas, sectionals, and seating arranged in a circle around the table. They're also easier to walk around in a small room. The 36" Natural Solid Wood Round Cross Legs Coffee Table is 36 inches across and 16 inches high, which suits a loveseat or an apartment-size sofa.
Nesting tables
If you want surface area only some of the time, nesting tables slide together when you need floor space and pull apart when guests come over. The Set of Two Natural Solid Wood Triangle Pedestal Nested Coffee Tables is listed at 39 inches wide and 18.5 inches high, with triangle tops that tuck together.
Coffee tables for sectionals
With an L-shaped sectional, the table should serve both sides of the L. Two approaches work well:
- A square or round table placed so it's reachable from both the long side and the chaise or return. Size it so there are 14 to 18 inches between the table and each seat edge.
- A long rectangle in front of the longer side, sized at about two-thirds of that side, with the chaise used for stretching out rather than reaching the table.
For a large sectional or a sofa of 96 inches or more, a longer table keeps the proportions right. The 72" Natural Solid Wood Distressed Coffee Table is listed at 72 inches long, 32 inches deep and 17 inches high, with a purposefully distressed finish.
Small living rooms
In a small room, choose a table that does double duty and keeps sight lines open.
- Look for storage. The 47" Gray White and Black Faux Marble Wood and Steel Lift Top Coffee Table is 47 inches long and 18 inches high. Its listing describes a lift top with hidden storage underneath and a pull-out storage box on wheels, useful for blankets and remotes.
- Consider open or light-looking bases. Legs and open frames let you see the floor underneath, which makes the room feel larger than a solid block would.
- Go round when the walkway is tight. A round table gives you the same reach with no corners in your path.
You'll find more sizes, shapes and heights in coffee tables, and if you're choosing the sofa at the same time, start with sofas so you have the length and seat height to work from. Looking for a particular style? Browse round coffee tables, glass coffee tables or marble coffee tables.

FAQ
Should a coffee table be higher or lower than the sofa?
Level with the sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches lower. For most sofas, that means a coffee table 16 to 18 inches tall.
How big should a coffee table be compared to the sofa?
About two-thirds of the sofa's length. For a 72-inch sofa, that's a table around 48 inches long; for an 84-inch sofa, around 54 to 56 inches.
How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?
14 to 18 inches from the front edge of the seat. That's close enough to reach and far enough for legs and feet.
Is a round coffee table good for a small living room?
Yes. A round table has no corners to walk into and fits well with loveseats and compact sofas. A table 30 to 36 inches across suits most small rooms.
What size coffee table goes with a sectional?
Either a square or round table reachable from both sides of the L, or a rectangle about two-thirds the length of the longer side. Keep 14 to 18 inches between the table and each seat.
Can a coffee table be too big?
Yes. If it's more than three-quarters of the sofa's length, deeper than about 32 inches, or leaves less than 24 inches of walking space, it will crowd the room.
