End Table Height Guide: How Tall Should a Side Table Be Next to a Sofa?
Share
An end table should be about the same height as the arm of your sofa, or up to 2 inches lower. Most sofa arms sit around 22 to 27 inches off the floor, which is why most end tables are about 20 to 26 inches tall. If your sofa has no arms, choose a table a few inches higher than the seat cushion, usually about 20 to 24 inches.
The size of the top and where the table sits matter almost as much as height. Here's how to measure, what to do with low or tall sofas, and examples from our collection at different heights.
End table height: quick guide
- The basic rule: table top level with the sofa arm, or 1 to 2 inches below it.
- Armless or low sofa: a few inches above the seat, usually 20 to 24 inches.
- Tall or rolled arms: about 26 to 28 inches.
- Top size: about 18 to 24 inches across for a lamp and a drink; 12 to 16 inches for a mug and a phone.
- Placement: about 2 to 6 inches from the arm, and no deeper than the sofa.
How to measure your sofa for end table height
Measure from the floor to the top of the arm, where your hand naturally rests. On a padded or rolled arm, press down lightly and read the number where the cushion settles. While the tape is out, measure the seat height too; most sofas land between about 17 and 19 inches.
Then subtract up to 2 inches from the arm height. That's your target range. A sofa with 25-inch arms, for example, pairs well with an end table about 23 to 25 inches tall.
Why level or a little lower works
When the top lines up with the arm, you can set down a mug or pick up the remote without lifting your elbow or leaning over the side. A table that rises well above the arm gets in your way, is awkward to reach while seated, and can put a lamp's bulb right in your eyes. A table more than about 4 inches below the arm isn't wrong, but you'll be reaching down for your drink. Lower surfaces belong in front of the sofa; our coffee table size and height guide covers those, which usually run about 16 to 18 inches tall.
Side table height next to armless, low or tall-armed sofas
Armless and low sofas
For armless sofas, daybeds and low, lounge-style sofas, go by the seat instead. A top about 2 to 6 inches above the seat cushion is easy to reach, which usually means a table about 20 to 24 inches tall.
Tall or rolled arms
Traditional rolled or high arms can reach 27 inches or more, so look for a table of about 26 to 28 inches. These are less common: of the tables in our collection that list a height, fewer than one in ten is taller than 26 inches, so measure before you shop.
Chairs, recliners and tight spots
Next to an accent chair, match the chair's arm, which is often lower than a sofa's. Beside a recliner, leave room for it to lean back. If there's little space between the sofa and a wall, a slim table about 8 to 12 inches deep still holds a drink, and a C-shaped table can slide its base under the sofa so the top reaches over the seat, as long as the sofa sits high enough off the floor.
Placement and pairs
- Keep the table no deeper than the sofa, lined up with the front of the arm or just behind it, so it stays out of the walkway.
- If it sits along a path through the room, leave about 30 inches or more of clear space to walk past.
- Tables at the two ends of a sofa don't have to match, but keeping their tops within an inch or two of each other looks calmer.
Adding a lamp
Aim for the bottom of the shade to land near eye level when you're seated, around 40 to 42 inches from the floor for many adults. Add the table height to the lamp height and subtract the shade: a 24-inch table with a 26-inch lamp and a 10-inch shade puts the shade bottom at 40 inches. Our table lamp size guide covers shade width and base size.
