Freestanding Pantry Cabinet Guide: How to Size One, Choose Doors and Anchor It Safely
Share
For most kitchens, a freestanding pantry cabinet about 72 inches tall, 16 to 32 inches wide and 12 to 16 inches deep gives the most storage without crowding the room. Go shallower, 8 to 12 inches, if it's going in a hallway or a tight galley, and go wider, 48 inches or more, if you have a full wall to fill. Choose the door layout by width: narrow cabinets have one column of doors, wider ones two or more. And whatever you buy, anchor it to the wall.
Here's how to measure, how to think about depth and shelf strength, and what the different door counts actually give you.
Quick sizing chart
- Narrow gap beside a fridge or at the end of a counter: 15 to 18 inches wide.
- Hallway, laundry room or small kitchen wall: 20 to 24 inches wide, 8 to 12 inches deep.
- Main kitchen pantry: about 30 to 38 inches wide, 15 to 16 inches deep.
- A full wall of storage: 48 to 65 inches wide.
- Height: 60 to 72 inches for most rooms; shorter cabinets around 48 inches work under a window or as a counter-height station.
Measure before you shop
- Width: measure the wall space, then subtract an inch or two so the cabinet doesn't scrape a neighboring cabinet, fridge or door trim.
- Height and ceiling: most freestanding pantries are assembled lying down and then tipped upright. A 72-inch cabinet needs a little more than 72 inches of clearance to stand up, so it's fine under standard 8-foot ceilings, but check low basements and sloped ceilings.
- Floor space in front: open the doors in your head. You need room for the doors to swing plus room to stand; about 36 inches of clear floor in front is comfortable.
- Baseboards and outlets: baseboards push the cabinet an inch or so away from the wall at the bottom. Note outlets, switches and vents so the cabinet doesn't cover them.
Depth: shallower is often better
A deep pantry sounds generous, but on deep shelves, food gets lost behind other food. At about 12 inches deep, cans and boxes sit one or two rows deep and you can see everything when you open the door. At 15 to 16 inches, you gain room for small appliances, bulk bags and paper towels, in exchange for a bit more digging.
The 63-inch white single door pantry shows how slim a pantry can go: it's listed at just 8.2 inches deep, 20.9 inches wide and 62.9 inches high. According to its listing, it combines a flat panel door with open shelving, for nine shelves in total, which suits spices, jars and cans in a hallway or beside a doorway.
Width and door count
Door count follows width. Here's what each layout gives you, using one solid pine series that comes in many colors.
Two doors, one column (about 16 inches wide)
A tall, narrow cabinet with an upper and a lower door fits a gap most furniture can't. The 72-inch coffee two door pantry is listed at 71.5 inches high, 16.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches deep, made of solid pine with raised panel doors and four adjustable shelves.
Four doors, two columns (about 32 inches wide)
This is the classic kitchen pantry size. The 72-inch sage four door pantry is listed at 32 inches wide and 15.5 inches deep, with glass front doors and four adjustable shelves.
Six doors and drawers (about 48 inches wide)
Drawers are handy for dish towels, foil and small items that disappear on shelves. The 72-inch gray six door, two drawer pantry is listed at 48.5 inches wide, with glass front doors, two drawers and eight adjustable shelves.
A full wall (65 inches wide)
For a wall of storage in a kitchen or dining room, the 72-inch off white solid wood pantry is listed at 65 inches wide with raised panel doors and 12 adjustable shelves. It's also listed at 257 pounds, a reminder to plan the delivery path and the assembly space.
Glass or solid doors?
Glass fronts make it easy to see what you have and work well for dishes, glassware and neatly stored jars. Solid doors hide the mix of cereal boxes and snack bags that most real pantries hold. If you love the look of glass but your pantry is busy, use matching bins or baskets behind it.
Check the shelf weight limit
This is the spec most people skip. Canned goods are heavy: a 24-pack of soda cans weighs around 20 pounds. Many listings give a weight capacity per shelf, and it varies a lot:
- The solid pine series above is listed at 50 pounds per shelf.
- The 71-inch white wood pantry, listed at 15.75 inches wide and 12.32 inches deep with four shelves, is listed at 20 pounds per shelf, better for boxes and lighter goods.
- The 61-inch white steel pantry with arched panel doors is listed at 120 pounds per shelf, with four adjustable shelves, at 27.6 inches wide and 13.8 inches deep. Its listing includes rooms like the garage, basement and laundry room, where heavy supplies tend to live.
Whatever the rating, load the heaviest items on the lowest shelves.
Anchor every tall cabinet
A tall, narrow cabinet full of food can tip forward, especially when doors are open or a child climbs the shelves. Secure it to the wall with an anti-tip kit, screwed into a wall stud wherever possible. Use the hardware that comes with the cabinet if it includes some, or buy a furniture anti-tip kit at a hardware store. If your wall is plaster, brick or tile, use anchors made for that material, and ask a handyman if you're unsure. Anchor the cabinet before you load it.
Assembly
The cabinets in this guide are listed as needing full or partial assembly. Clear a floor area a little larger than the cabinet, keep the hardware sorted, and plan on two people to stand a tall unit upright.
You can compare all the sizes and colors in pantry cabinets, and browse the rest of the kitchen in kitchen and dining. Solid wood linen cabinets in many of the same colors are in bathroom storage, if you want matching storage elsewhere in the house.

FAQ
How deep should a pantry cabinet be?
About 12 inches keeps everything visible; 15 to 16 inches adds room for small appliances and bulk items. In a hallway, even 8 inches works for cans and spices.
How tall is a freestanding pantry cabinet?
Most are 60 to 72 inches tall. Taller cabinets hold more, but the top shelf is best for things you use less often.
Do I need to anchor a pantry cabinet to the wall?
Yes. Any tall, freestanding cabinet should be secured to the wall with an anti-tip kit, ideally into a stud, especially in homes with children.
Is a four-door or two-door pantry better?
It depends on width. A two-door pantry is usually a single narrow column; a four-door pantry is twice as wide with two columns and holds much more.
