Shopping for Furniture on Black Friday: A Calm Checklist

Shopping for Furniture on Black Friday: A Calm Checklist

Black Friday can be a reasonable time to buy furniture, if the price is genuinely good and the piece fits your room, your doorways and your timeline. Shop the way you would any other week: measure first, check delivery and returns, and judge the price on its own.

A quick note before you start: FurniFindUSA doesn't run Black Friday markdowns, coupons or promotions. This is a guide to buying well, wherever you shop.

The quick checklist

  • Measure the room, plus every doorway, hallway, stairwell and elevator on the way in.
  • Pick the date you need the piece by, then work backward from it.
  • Read the return policy before you check out, not after the box arrives.
  • Question the "was" price. A reference price only means something if the item was really offered at it for a while.
  • Read the listing for materials and dimensions, not just the photos.
  • Plan for assembly: time, tools and a second pair of hands.
  • Ignore the countdown timer. A good choice will still look good tomorrow.

Measure the room, then the path in

Mark the piece's width and depth with painter's tape where it will live and leave it for a day. Walk around it and open nearby doors. Main walkways feel comfortable with about 30 to 36 inches of clearance.

Then measure the route in: each doorway, the tightest hallway turn, the stairwell (including the ceiling above it) and the elevator, if you have one. A sofa that fits the room but not the stairs isn't a fit.

Remember that the box is often bigger than the furniture. Many of our listings note the shipping size and number of cartons beside the item's dimensions. The 80" White Linen Blend Modular Loveseat and Toss Pillows, for example, lists two cartons. Knowing that ahead of time tells you how much space to clear and if you'll need a helper.

Work backward from the date you need it

This year, Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. If a piece is a gift, or needs to be ready for December guests, the calendar matters more than the day you click "buy."

Contiguous U.S. delivery usually takes 4 to 10 business days, including processing, with a tracking link by email. Canadian orders usually take 4 to 13 business days, including processing.

Those are typical windows, not guarantees, and business days skip weekends and holidays, so add a week or so of buffer. For gifts, browsing in October or early November takes the pressure off. Start with our housewarming gift ideas and cozy gifts for the home.

Read the return policy before you check out

Furniture is hard to send back, so know the rules first: how many days you have, what condition the item must be in, if the original packaging is required and who pays return shipping.

Our policy allows returns within 30 days of delivery for items that are unused and in their original condition and packaging. That last part is easy to forget: open boxes carefully and keep the cartons until you're sure. Return shipping is the customer's cost unless the item arrives defective, damaged or incorrect. Original shipping costs aren't refundable. The full details are in our refund policy.

Read a "was" price like a skeptic

A crossed-out price is meant to make the current one feel like a win. But a reference price only means something if the item was openly offered at that price, in good faith, for a real stretch of time, not just for a few days before the markdown. That's the idea behind the FTC's guidance on former-price comparisons.

A few ways to check:

  • Follow a piece you like for a few weeks before the holiday, noting the price and date.
  • Compare like for like: same dimensions, same materials, same number of pieces.
  • Ask yourself if you'd buy it at this price with no "was" price shown at all.

Read the listing, not just the photos

Photos show the look. The listing tells you what you're actually buying. Check:

  • Dimensions: height, width and depth, plus seat height for chairs and sofas.
  • Materials: "solid wood" and "manufactured wood" are different things, and so are "genuine leather" and "faux leather."
  • Fabric and care: upholstery type and removable covers.
  • Weight and cartons: how heavy the boxes are and how many will arrive.

The 31" White and Brown Boucle and Solid Wood Arm Chair is described as upholstered in soft boucle, with wood legs that show their natural grain, a partially open curved back and padded armrests. The loveseat above notes that its slip covers come off for cleaning, handy with kids or pets.

Plan for assembly

Many pieces arrive needing some assembly, so check the listing and set aside unhurried time. Clear floor space, keep a screwdriver and hex key nearby, and lay out the hardware first. Anything heavy is a two-person job. Keep the instructions and spare hardware in a labeled bag for your next move.

Let the countdown run out

Timers, "only 2 left" banners and limited-time pop-ups are designed to speed you up. Furniture rewards slowing down. Make your list before the weekend, set a budget per room and give big purchases a 24-hour pause. If the piece still makes sense tomorrow, measurements in hand, it's probably the right one. Slow looks good on you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Friday a good time to buy furniture?

It can be, if the price is genuinely lower than what the item usually sells for and the piece fits your space and schedule. If either is in doubt, any other week is just as good.

Does FurniFindUSA have a Black Friday sale?

No. We don't run Black Friday discounts, coupons or promotions. Free shipping on U.S. orders over $120 (contiguous U.S.) is our standard policy, not a holiday offer.

When should I order furniture to have it before the holidays?

Earlier than you think. Contiguous U.S. delivery usually takes 4 to 10 business days, including processing. Those are typical windows, not guarantees, so leave a buffer.

What if the piece doesn't fit?

You can return items within 30 days of delivery if they're unused and in their original condition and packaging. Return shipping is paid by the customer unless the item arrives defective, damaged or incorrect. Original shipping costs aren't refundable. That's why measuring first matters.
